Company History

For over 50 years, the United States Sports University, formerly known as United States Sports Academy, has shaped the future of sports through education, innovation, and leadership. This is where passion meets purpose.

The 1972 Munich Olympics exposed significant weaknesses in the U.S. sports system, particularly in coaching, training methods, and sports science. In response, Dr. Rosandich founded the United States Sports Academy (USSA). His goal was to create a global center for sports education, offering specialized degrees and certifications in fields such as coaching, sports management, and exercise science. The Academy was designed to bridge the gap between theory and practice, equipping professionals with the knowledge needed to enhance athletic performance and organizational leadership. From its inception, USSA was more than just a school—it was a pioneering institution committed to advancing the science and business of sports.

From its founding, USSU (formerly USSA) was designed as a “university without walls,” offering flexible, high-quality sports education to students worldwide. Recognizing that traditional education models restricted access to specialized training, Dr. Thomas P. Rosandich and the Academy’s founders prioritized distance learning, mentorship, and global partnerships to remove these barriers.

The United States Sports Academy (USSA) initially operated in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, before relocating to the University of South Alabama in Mobile in 1976. This move marked a significant step in the Academy’s development, allowing it to integrate with an established academic institution and expand its presence in the sports education landscape.

In 1983, the Academy found its permanent home in Daphne, Alabama, where it would continue to evolve as a pioneering institution in sports education. That same year, the institution received its initial accreditation from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC), ensuring its programs met high academic standards.

In 1984, the United States Sports Academy (USSA) embraced the connection between sports and art, recognizing the profound cultural and historical relationship between athletic achievement and artistic expression. This vision led to the establishment of the American Sport Art Museum & Archives (ASAMA), dedicated to preserving and celebrating sports through various artistic mediums, including paintings, sculptures, and photography. ASAMA quickly became a world-renowned institution, housing one of the largest collections of sports-related art, featuring works that capture the energy, movement, and emotion of athletic competition.

In 2023, Dr. Steve Condon was appointed as the third president of the United States Sports University (USSU), bringing with him a wealth of experience in higher education leadership, institutional development, and sports administration. With a deep passion for academic excellence and student success, Dr. Condon is committed to advancing USSU’s global reputation, strengthening alumni engagement, and expanding academic opportunities for future sports professionals.

In 2024, the United States Sports Academy (USSA) introduced intercollegiate athletics, marking a historic milestone in the institution’s evolution.

On March 1, 2025, the institution officially changed its name from the United States Sports Academy (USSA) to the United States Sports University (USSU). This transformation reflects the university’s expanding role in sports education, its commitment to academic excellence, and its vision for the future of sports leadership.
