The Controller is an important member of the financial leadership team who provides recommendations for improving university-wide financial management; ensures accounting procedures conform to Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and Governmental Accounting Standards Board (GASB) pronouncements as related to higher education universities; manages the preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual reports of financial activities; directs financial audits; ensures compliance with state and federal regulations; and implements procedural improvements.
Accountable for the daily operations of general accounting, tax accounting, post-award research accounting, accounts payable, and payroll. Supervises preparation of all internal and external financial reporting including but not limited to tax filings, IPEDs reporting, grantor agency financial reports, reporting to the State of Colorado, bond compliance reporting, and the audited annual report. Places a strong emphasis on continued and improved customer service from the Controller’s Office. (35%)
Serves as a financial leader, contributing to the university’s cultural, policy and financial framework as essential organizational infrastructure for public higher education. Building strong, university-wide relationships is vital, particularly with staff in administrative service centers and campus leaders. (15%)
Coordinates the annual financial and compliance audit of the University. Represents the controller’s office in other audits as necessary. (15%)
Interprets and applies accounting theory to assure that the university’s financial statements adhere to generally accepted accounting principles and applicable GASB pronouncements. Interprets and applies state and federal regulations and department of education policies and procedure to ensure university compliance. (10%)
Serves as primary accounting contact for the State Controller’s and State Treasurer’s offices. Responds to requests for information from other state agencies. Acts as the University’s representative on the state higher education accounting advisory committee, which is responsible for setting state-wide accounting policies and procedures. (10%)
Maintains the integrity and accuracy of the university’s accounting and financial reporting systems by coordinating with Information Management and Technology Department for system changes/updates, access controls, and year-end processes. (10%)
Works closely with Purchasing staff on internal control, banking, appropriate accounting for contract administration, and other issues related to the management of those functions. (5%)
Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration with emphasis in Accounting.
Minimum of 7 years progressively responsible accounting experience including 5 years of government or non-profit accounting, preferably in higher education. Minimum of 3 years supervising professional personnel. Experience analyzing financial performance and communicating results to all levels of management within higher education or non-profit environment.
Knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP)
Knowledge of higher-education fund accounting and reporting, including GASB, NACUBO, and State of Colorado higher education reporting standards
Knowledge of the use and development of financial systems
Knowledge of spreadsheets, database applications, and report writing tools for databases
Ability to plan, develop and maintain financial databases for management reporting.
Excellent interpersonal, communication, and professional leadership skills
Requires a high level of integrity and sound judgement
Ability to effectively communicate financial information to diverse audiences
