The Tax Consultant is responsible for university-wide compliance with federal and state laws on unrelated business income (UBI), including completion of annual federal and multi-state tax filings for the university (including medical center) and OSU Foundation using CTRAC; detail analysis of alternative investment K-1s and all related attachments, including footnotes, to identify potential UBIT and prepare required foreign information filings as attachments to Form 990-T. The Tax Consultant is responsible to coordinate multiple business unit sales tax reporting and remits monthly consolidated sales taxes to Ohio and other states, annual sales taxes to localities, and quarterly Canada GST returns. The Tax Consultant is responsible for preparing monthly federal excise tax payments and quarterly returns as well as monthly local admissions tax payments and returns. The Tax Consultant also assists Accounts Payable with 1099 reporting issues and employee-independent contractor determinations; works with 4-H coordinators annually to maintain and update our Group Exemption with the IRS.
The Tax Consultant is responsible for the identification of tax related risks and the mitigation strategy, tax research, and development of tax positions. Coordinates with other university offices for purposes of interpreting tax regulations and develops policies and procedures to ensure compliance with all laws, statutes, and regulations.
Additional responsibilities include the identification and research, analysis, and projects on risk associated with tax positions and compliance, audit readiness, process improvement, on-going process documentation, record retention, and other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in accounting, business administration, a related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience. Six (6) years of tax experience. Strong analytical, technical, decision-making, and problem-solving skills. High attention to detail and strong organization and time management skills. Strong communication and interpersonal skills. Positive attitude, a willingness to adapt to new business technologies/processes, experience working with large, decentralized organizations, and the ability to work effectively both independently and in a team environment.
Desired Qualifications:
CPA certification, unrelated business income (UBI) tax experience in exempt org, governmental, or higher education. Experience with alternative investment K-1s. Experience using CTRAC system. Proficient in Microsoft Suite applications with moderate to advanced excel skills including pivot tables and VLookup. Experience with Workday and ADP SmartCompliance platforms.
The Target Hiring Range for this position is $85,000 to $114,000 per year.
