Salt Lake Community College invites nominations and applications for the position of Assistant Vice President for Business Services/Controller.

Reporting to the Vice President for Finance and Administration/CFO, the AVP for Business Services/Controller, provides management, strategy, and leadership for the Business Services Division. Serving as the principal accounting officer for the college, the AVP for Business Services leads the daily financial operations of the College including accounting and reporting, accounts receivable, accounts payable, purchasing, payroll, cashiering, student loan and collection functions, treasury and investing. The AVP for Business Services is responsible for auxiliary services and other business, revenue and entrepreneurial activities.
The AVP for Business Services has primary responsibility for maintaining accounting records, internal financial controls, recommending and maintaining appropriate fiscal policies and procedures, monitoring budget performance, ensuring compliance with applicable federal and state laws, as well as College rules and regulations, recommending and implementing methods to improve efficiency of operations, and providing guidance in fiscal matters relating to the operation and strategies of the College.
In addition, this position is responsible for the management and oversight of Banner Finance, the College’s financial accounting software system, as well as other financial software. Responsible for direction and final review of the College’s annual financial report, annual State Finance reports and other financial reports for internal management purposes.
Requirements
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
- Current knowledge of an entire range of evolving generally accepted accounting principles and practices as applied to higher education including such sources as the AICPA, FASB, GASB, NACUBO and the Utah Board of Higher Education.
- Thorough understanding of basic principles and tenets of sound internal control systems and current audit theories preferably through several years’ employment with a large CPA firm or higher education institution.
- Up-to-date on the latest office management techniques and motivational theory; investment options and interest rate trends.
- Knowledge of federal contract and grant requirements and stipulations; and student-aid, loan collection, due diligence and satisfactory progress as applied to the College environment.
- Proficiency with major computer hardware and software products including knowledge of the Banner Finance system preferred.
- The ability to communicate effectively with all levels of the College community; interface and negotiate knowledgeably with audit agencies and review boards; supervise highly skilled professionals and staff in accounting functions and related fields.
- The ability to analyze problems and seek logical cause and effect solutions.
- Ability to analyze practices and policy from an equity lens perspective and make changes to ensure all business services and processes are inclusive, equitable and accessible.
- Guide efforts to recruit, develop and retain talented colleagues from diverse identities, backgrounds and experiences.
- Ability to communicate effectively with a broad range of diverse people, ability, culture, ethnic background, to maintain good working relationships across the College.
- Ability to work with all groups in a diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic background of community college students, faculty, and staff, including those with disabilities.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Master’s degree in business or accounting from an accredited college or university and CPA certification.
- Five (5) years of supervisory experience.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Seven (7) years of experience working in public accounting and/or with a higher education institution.
