The Director of Risk Management will be responsible for directing and controlling program operations and is accountable for the allocation of resources and program results. This position will regularly exercise independent judgment and discretion in work directly related to management policies or department business operations and will have delegated authority to make commitments that affect department operations. Additionally, this position will lead, supervise and mentor Risk Management program staff.
General Risk Management
-
Lead and assist the system and units in the development of a risk framework.

Provide education across the system on risk awareness, risk appetite as it relates to unit, campus and system goals, and risk mitigation

Lead and/or support, and serve on applicable program Presidential Committees, departmental and stakeholder committees and task force groups, including the Risk Management Advisory Group

Together with Emergency Management, coordinate plans and efforts to prevent, respond to, and recover from, program related emergencies

Continuity of Operations Planning – coordinate and work with the WSU emergency management department to assist departments develop and implement continuity of operations plans.

Lead incident investigations assigned to risk management
-
Manage WSU’s lines of insurance coverage; educate units about insurance options, follow market trends, analyze, and recommend coverage options for units and the system.

Serve as a resource expert to the University community and stay abreast of current events, applicable laws, regulations, and trends so that the University responds in a timely fashion to changes in the higher education risk landscape

Manage the risk management unit and budget
Claims/Litigation Management
-
Together with the CCRO, manage all claims and litigation involving the University.
-
Track and analyze litigation and claims history, insure follow up on specific claims, work with units to identify and implement corrective actions.

Coordinate with Department of Enterprise Services, the Attorney General’s Office, and/or outside counsel.
-
Assist counsel with claims and litigation support, including review of pre-trial motions, trial preparation, tracking litigation holds, and coordinating between counsel and WSU units.
International Risk Management
-
Work with administrative units and colleges active in the international arena to elevate consideration of and planning for risks in international activities.

Work collaboratively with International Programs to identify, assess, and manage risks unique to its programs.

Support the International Risk Committee

Build out resources to address risk in international travel

Build out resources to assist with international risk management.
Enterprise Risk Management

Supervise the Enterprise Risk Management Program.

Work with the Risk Manager to design, implement and operationalize an ERM program across the system and campuses of WSU.

Work with the CCRO and Risk Management Executive Committee to identify, analyze, control, finance, and administer WSU’s enterprise risks.
Required Qualifications:
-
Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field and six (6) years of progressively responsible relevant experience, which has included at least one (1) year of managerial experience. An advanced degree in a related field may count towards years of experience.

Experience working with, interpreting and applying federal and state laws and institutional policies.

Demonstrated experience actively listening, problem sensing and solving problems in a customer oriented environment.

Preferred Qualifications:

J.D. from an accredited institution.

Experience working in higher education.

Experience with international risk management.

Previous work experience at an institution of higher education.

Familiarity with Washington State University academic rules and regulations
