Purpose
Provide overall leadership and strategic direction to Payroll Services and oversee all processes and programs that support payroll operations. Foster an environment of collaboration in addition to creating a culture focused on operational excellence.
Responsibilities
- Direct and oversee all operations of Payroll Services, including hiring and supervising a staff of over 25 employees, coordinating payroll processes to ensure timeliness and accuracy of payments to approximately 29,000 employees, reporting and remittances of insurance, retirement, and other deductions as well as posting of fringe benefit and payroll accounting transactions.
- Develop a strong and dynamic leadership team by providing feedback related to performance, conveying importance of individual responsibility and accountability, recognizing successes and achievements, and setting standards in terms of professionalism and integrity.
- Foster strategic alliances with campus leaders, business process owners and departments to develop payroll policies, procedures and business processes that are compliant and also innovative and representative of higher education best practices.
- Continue to partner with the Workday sustainment team and internal team members to implement, validate and review Workday functionality and system updates to make sure payroll configurations, calculations, integrations and reporting are working as expected.
- Collaborate with UT-System General Counsel, UT Legal Affairs and key administrators in the interpretation of new or amended University or System policies, state laws and federal regulations as they impact payroll operations.
- Work directly with external and internal auditors to ensure continued compliance and adherence with applicable state and federal laws related to payroll, human resources and financial operations.

This position provides for work-life balance with typically a 40-hour work week that includes flexible work arrangements.
Payroll Services at The University of Texas at Austin is responsible for producing and distributing payroll for approximately 29,000 employees. Payroll processes monthly, semi-monthly and off-cycle payrolls for employees of the university. Our Benefits and Deductions Teams are responsible for remitting and reporting payroll deductions and other payroll information to UT System Administration, state and federal agencies, and third-party vendors. We ensure compliance with federal, state and university laws and guidelines.
Must be eligible to work in the US on a full-time basis for any employer without sponsorship.
Requirements
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Business-related field. Minimum of 8 years as a manager in payroll or financial management. Comprehensive understanding of higher education payroll environment and applicable state and federal laws. Excellent organizational, communication, analytical, and problem-solving skills as well as exceptional attention to detail. Ability to exercise independent judgment and make decisions. Ability to exercise discretion and tact in interactions involving confidential and sensitive information. Demonstrated experience as a strong, inclusive leader dedicated to a culture that promotes employee success. Strong commitment to providing superior customer service to our employees and campus units. Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with other departments and all levels of employees. Demonstrated experience in continuous improvement, knowledge of payroll systems and improvement practices, to promote efficiencies and effectiveness. Proven high proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Excel.
