Job Description:
What We're Looking For
Baylor University's Financial Services Department is seeking a Tax manager to join the team. As the Tax Manager you will serve as a key contact and program expert related to the university's various federal, state, and local tax compliance requirements. Additionally, the successful candidate will demonstrate the following:
- Understanding of the needs of a diverse student population within a Christian higher education setting and an openness to cultural humility
- Strong interpersonal and written & oral communication skills
- Ability to coordinate with multiple departments and levels internally as well as with external agencies and individuals
- Ability to organize work to meet timetables and deadlines (performance under pressure)
- A team player with ability to work independently under minimal supervision
- Proficient with online systems.
- Be available to work occasional after hours
- Be able to provide training in areas of experience or expertise.
- Be successful communicating and interacting with all campus populations including students, faculty, and staff
A Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field, five years of relevant work experience, a CPA, and an active Christian faith are required. A Master's Degree in Taxation, and eight years of relevant work experience are preferred. Hybrid work will be considered for this position. Applicants must be currently authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis.
What You Will Do
- Serve as key contact and program expert related to the University's various federal, state, and local tax compliance requirements
- Provide guidance to campus to minimize risk for non-compliance
- Prepare tax returns applicable to the University, including Forms 990 and 990-T, state UBI returns, excise tax returns, and other returns required by exempt organization law
- Coordinate gathering required information from multiple stakeholders across the University
- Oversight and review of multiple state sales tax returns prepared by others
- Maintain substantive tax knowledge for tax-exempt organizations and research skill and translate tax knowledge and research into practical advice to stakeholders
- Ensure all filing and reporting deadlines are met and financial records are maintained in compliance with external regulations
- Consult with University stakeholders to ensure that filing obligations are met across states where the University has activities and research activities in new locations that may create nexus
- Manage University unclaimed property filings and compliance, in all states where reporting is required
- Prepare training materials and documentation to keep stakeholders abreast of changes to key tax compliance requirements
- Maintain a current tax manual which provides guidance to campus users on typical tax matters applicable to a research university
- Perform other tasks as assigned
