The Assistant Controller is responsible for ensuring all financial activities of the University are properly accounted for and recorded in the general ledger and other financial systems on a monthly, quarterly and annual basis within predetermined timelines. This position leads the preparation of year-end financial statements, interim and other related or industry specific reports. This position reports directly to the Controller and will supervise approximately 2 employees who may also have direct reports. Ideal candidate will have held similar position before and be able to perform responsibilities with minimal supervision. They will be organized with good time management skills and able to multi task with competing priorities. Candidate must be a good fit within the department, division and University. Ability to communicate and interact with staff, management and various employees throughout the University in a concise and clear manner while exercising patience and professionalism at all times.
This position, supported by his or her staff, provides excellent customer service at all times to both internal and external customers. Must have ability to function at a high level and make good decisions as variables change and problems are encountered. Helps guide staff during these times and re-prioritize tasks. Able to identify high and low risk areas and communicate and coordinate work appropriately. When problems/obstacles are encountered works to identify solutions.
Primary duties and responsibilities for this position includes:
Thorough understanding of GAAP and accrual basis accounting and best practices within accounting is required.
Ability to complete accounting research, appropriately apply and implement, discuss with management and auditors and document.
In partnership with Accounting Manager owns the General Ledger in order to close books on a monthly, quarterly and annual basis within specified and non-negotiable deadlines.
Emphasizes a team work environment in order to meet deadlines. First year of getting up to speed and process improvement will require some overtime. Some overtime is also necessary during quarter end and year-end periods.
Keeps up to date on new accounting standards and implements best practices in the accounting industry for the close process and accounting and related departments.
Helps ensures that the appropriate internal controls are in place in regards to the close process, inputs and outputs of the general ledger and overall integrity, completeness and accuracy of the general ledger and supporting systems. This includes making sure the appropriate policies and procedures are in place, documented and communicated.
In partnership with Accounting Manager organizes, trains and develops staff to complete responsibilities at a level and quality that creates the appropriate layers within the department. Ensures staff are cross trained and processes are documented. Identifies and develops staff to progress to next level as part of progression plan.
Responsible for the overall structure and integrity of the general ledger. Responsible for GL maintenance and the year-end close out process.
In partnership with other departments responsible for financial activity and ensuring the university is in compliance with federal, state, etc. funding, loan and grant programs and ensure the appropriate required reporting is complete, accurate and within required deadlines.
Serve and support University committees and counterparts within other academic, support and cross-functional teams.
Fluctuation analysis of balance sheet and income statement as part of the quarterly and year-end close process.
Various ad-hoc analysis as required.
Responsible for coordinating and leading various projects and process improvements on behalf of the Controller’s Office while performing other day to day work. Makes suggestions and leads projects on how to better utilize functionality available in the system. Consistently improves and enhances business processes to create greater operating efficiencies. Participates on cross-functional university teams and committees involving new process and initiatives.

Requirements or Preferred Skills:
Minimum 7 years of experience in accounting or related field required; including at least two years in a managerial role with multiple direct reports.
Excellent technology skills are a must for this job. Intermediate excel skills are required including complex use of formulas, pivot tables and ability to work with and manipulate large amounts of data.
Accounting Degree required. MBA preferred. CPA preferred.
Must have prior experience and knowledge of how to complete a comprehensive close process working with multiple departments within specified deadlines to accurately and completely produce financial results and prepare financial statements.
Must have prior experience in leading both the full preparation of financial statements and year-end audit.
Prior experience in system conversions and implementations a plus.
Prior experience with process improvement and implementation of new or best practices/processes a plus.
Diverse background in accounting and finance a plus including payroll, accounts payable, receivables, treasury, tax, financial reporting and budgets.
Must have ability and willingness to be both detailed oriented when needed and hands on as well as able to manage big picture. For example, may need to create and record journal entries and/or create or prepare reconciliations at various stages due to resources, timing or complexity.
Prior experience in Higher Education not required.
