The Vice President, Internal Audit reports to the President and the Chair of the Audit & Risk Committee of the Board of Trustees; this position directs a broad, comprehensive program of internal audit within the university, examining and evaluating the adequacy and effectiveness of the systems of internal control, financial accounting, and operational efficiency. The Vice President assists members of management in the effective discharge of their responsibilities by furnishing them with analyses, appraisals, recommendations, and pertinent comments concerning the activities reviewed. The internal auditor is concerned with any phase of university activity where they can be of service to management. This involves going beyond the accounting and financial records to obtain a full understanding of the operations under review.
The Vice President, Internal Audit will communicate and employ interpersonal actions that model high standards of professional, responsible, accountable, and ethical conduct. This executive will demonstrate a commitment to outstanding customer service. The successful candidate will possess and project the utmost integrity and must be an individual qualified by accomplishment and experience with at least eight years of professional auditing experience gained in progressively responsible leadership roles. Audit experience in a higher education setting is preferred and managerial experience is highly desired; corporate finance executives with a clear understanding of the distinctive nature of academia within a mission-driven, private university will be considered.
The Vice President will have demonstrated expertise in the principles of management, accounting and audit theory, practices and procedures, organizational analysis, and knowledge of regulations that might influence the university, combined with a strong understanding of generally acceptable accounting principles and auditing standards, as well as the Institute of Internal Auditors’ professional standards. The Vice President will be skilled at effectively managing traditional audit engagements, including the design of an audit plan, and be able to analyze and evaluate operational aspects of an area to recommend steps for improvement. This strategic thinker will understand how to access, organize, review, and evaluate complex data and information, including the ability to review the testing performed by and reports of other auditors. Capable of providing succinct reports and analyses, this adept communicator will recommend appropriate corrective action at reasonable cost. Success will depend on working well with university leaders, obtaining maximum cooperation and providing significant audit findings and recommendations for operational efficiency and effectiveness. The ideal candidate will be a highly productive and innovative leader, with a vision for the future and strong change management skills. This individual will also have a leadership style characterized by openness, trust, collegiality, and creativity, coupled with decisiveness and a strong commitment to LMU’s mission, vision, and core values.
The successful candidate will hold a bachelor’s degree with major course work/emphasis in accounting and a CPA or CIA; an MBA is preferred.
