Smith College, one of the largest independent women’s colleges in the country, seeks a collaborative and strategic professional with expertise in both financial strategy and business operations to serve as its next vice president for finance and administration (VPFA). The VPFA along with the president, Board of Trustees, and senior colleagues, will reinforce Smith’s enviable financial position and strengthen its financial and operational systems and structures in support of the college’s academic mission.
The VPFA will partner with the president and other senior leaders as they work to enhance Smith’s position as an institution of academic excellence and international renown. With an inspiring and ambitious president, an engaged Board, first-rate senior colleagues, and a talented team of direct reports, the next VPFA will join Smith at an ideal and exciting moment. The college and division of finance and administration have a long list of accomplishments to boast of, but they must remain focused on the projects currently underway and prepare for the important work ahead.
Founded in 1871 as a private college with a mission to educate women of promise for lives of distinction and purpose, Smith is widely considered to be one of the top 20 liberal arts institutions in the country and one of the nation’s best managed colleges. Primarily an undergraduate residential college, with an impressive endowment of nearly $2 billion, Smith stands alone in many ways. It is large enough to have the resources of a university, yet small enough to be an intimate community.
Smith seeks a VPFA who will achieve consistent excellence in the execution of its financial affairs, improve the efficiency and effectiveness of campus operations, steward its assets, manage risk carefully, and provide astute financial counsel to help the college realize its aspirations and meet its bold ambitions. The successful candidate will possess technical expertise and broad managerial experience combined with a collegial style that will engender trust and foster collaboration across the college. Reporting to the president, the VPFA oversees finance, human resources, facilities, dining services, environmental sustainability, non-degree programs, and campus police, while serving as the liaison to the Board of Trustees, legal counsel, and an outside investment firm, Investure. The VPFA will manage a budget of more than $40 million and oversee a staff of approximately 335.
