Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking an Assistant Director – Underwriting for The Department of Risk Management & Insurance. The Assistant Director – Underwriting reports to the Executive Director of Risk Management & Insurance, and is responsible for the day-to-day management of Property, Casualty, Marine, Fine Arts, Foreign Liability, Accident & Health, and various other insurance and self-insurance programs. In addition, the Assistant Director – Underwriting is responsible for supporting various risk management activities, such as contract review, development of waivers, maintenance of incoming and outgoing certificates of insurance, and the risk management of various international programs and activities. This position performs professional work requiring specialized knowledge of insurance coverages and a solid understanding and application of concepts, theories, principles, practices, regulations, terminology, and applied bases in risk management and insurance.
Among the key duties of this position are the following: • Collaborates on risk management issues with various University units, such as Environmental Health and Safety, Office of Emergency Management, General Counsel, Facilities, Residence Life, Student Activities, Global Programs and Athletics. • Independently maintains underwriting data and presents the University’s various risks to underwriters for cost effective program placements and renewals. • Maintains relationships with brokers, carriers and insurance service providers. • Identifies, analyzes and presents loss and exposure information to management for prudent risk financing treatments. • Serves as an Alternate Director to the University’s risk retention group. • Oversight of international travel of students, faculty and staff, including international travel tracking, and the provision of international health insurance and emergency travel services. • Provides informed consent waivers for various on-campus and off-campus University activities. • Provides various financial analysis and reporting. Participation in various University groups and committees. • Acts as general University resource and advisor for all risk management and insurance related questions and issues.
Minimum Education and Experience
• Bachelor’s degree in finance, business administration, economics, or related field. • Minimum of five years of relevant professional experience in a risk management and/or insurance role.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
• Experience must demonstrate comprehensive knowledge and understanding of property and casualty risk management and insurance principles and practices, including sound knowledge of captives and other alternative risk-financing vehicles. • Requires the ability to work effectively across numerous disciplines and with broad departmental constituencies. • Must be well-organized with the ability to balance conflicting priorities and remain calm under pressure. • Must handle confidential and personal information with discretion. • Requires excellent oral and written communication and presentation skills. • Requires strong Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint skills. • Requires a strong “customer service” mentality and the ability to effectively deal with challenging constituents.
