Emory University’s Division of Finance is seeking a Director of Accounting who possesses strong knowledge of U.S. GAAP, internal controls, audit, and financial reporting.
This position is responsible for producing enterprise level consolidated and supplemental financial statements on a monthly and quarterly basis which includes variance analysis, trend reports, and executive summaries
Prepares annual GAAP consolidated financial statements for the interim and annual financial statement audits.
Oversees accounting and financial reporting functions which include inter-company accounting, review and preparation of financial statement closing journal entries, account reconciliations, and variance analytics.
Provides technical accounting GAAP guidance for all enterprise stakeholders and recommends changes as necessary for financial statement reporting.
Plans and implements FASB Accounting Standard updates.
Collaborates with other Finance Division areas and Emory University schools, units, and Emory Healthcare central finance to ensure quality of transactions by close of the period and to provide adequate and consistent subsequent review.
Coordinates all consolidated financial statement preparation including all required footnotes and disclosures during the audit fieldwork period.
Completes financial statement audit prepared by client schedules in financial reporting area and responds to audit questions related to these items.
Oversees the implementation of agreed upon recommendations resulting from internal and external audit findings.
Reviews financial information provided on various external financial surveys and reporting updates for rating agencies.
Advises staff and management regarding the handling of non-routine reporting transactions, such as acquisitions and dispositions or establishment of new financial reporting entities.
Participates in and/or leads departmental and cross-functional teams in the development and implementation of new procedures and features to enhance and support overall department goals and objectives.
Collaborates on financial system upgrades, performance metrics, departmental goals and other initiatives in the Finance Division.
Is responsible for developing and maintaining accounting principles, practices and procedures to ensure accurate and timely financial statements.
Manages staff to ensure that work is properly allocated and completed in a timely and accurate manner.
Addresses tight deadlines and a multitude of accounting activities including general ledger preparation, financial reporting, year-end audit preparation, board materials preparation, and the support of budget and forecast activities.
Interacts with Office of General Counsel, Emory Investment Management, the Controller, chief business officers in schools/units and senior management.
Oversees accounting functions, including intercompany accounting, financial reporting, balance sheet management and income statement variance analytics.
Ensures an accurate and timely monthly, quarterly, and year end close.
Ensures the timely reporting of all monthly financial information.
Is accountable for ensuring that policies and procedures (internal controls) are in place to provide reasonable assurance that the institutional assets are protected.
Coordinates internal controls documentation, testing and segregation of duties as needed.
Collaborates with the other finance department managers to support overall department goals and objectives.
Monitors and analyzes department work to develop more efficient procedures and use of resources while maintaining a high level of accuracy.
Works with the Controller to ensure a clean and timely year end audit.
Assists in the development and implementation of new procedures and features to enhance the workflow of the department.
Provides staff training, handles personnel issues, and works with each direct report to establish goals and objectives for each year; monitors professional development opportunities and participation.
Collaborates with the Controller and Assistant Controller on special projects and process improvements.
Responds to inquiries from the VP for Finance/CFO, Controller, and departments regarding financial results and special reporting requests.
Ensures that the institution's financial records, under area of responsibility, are maintained in compliance with policies and US GAAP.
Responsible for reviewing monthly/quarterly account reconciliations and other documents to ensure compliance.
Is involved in validating/designing accounting system suggested changes to ensure accounting requirements continue to be met.
Coordinates work related to both internal and external audits in the periodic review of the financial records.
Performs related responsibilities as required.
Exposure to mergers and acquisitions is a plus.
A bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance or a related field; a master’s degree in Accounting, Finance or related field or CPA preferred.
Seven years of public, non-profit or private industry accounting experience, management level experience preferred.
Experience analyzing financial performance and communicating results to all levels of management within a higher education or non-profit environment is a plus.
Excellent verbal, written, communication and leadership skills.
