The Office of the Dean of Arts & Sciences at William & Mary is seeking a Director of Administration and Finance. The Director is a member of the senior leadership team in Arts & Sciences administration: four academic deans, the A&S Director of Communications, the Executive Director of A&S Development. This position reports directly to the Dean of the Faculty of Arts & Sciences. The Director is the principal financial advisor and primary resource to the Dean, whose base budget is $73M, and to the Dean’s leadership team. The Director oversees all fiscal, administrative and personnel policies and procedures of the University and the State for A&S. The Director provides guidance for and acts as an information resource for 40+ departments and programs with over 500 faculty and 60 administrative staff, and oversees the administrative staff in the Dean’s office.
Responsibilities consist of, but are not limited to, the following:
Conduct regular analyses of A&S finances for the Dean and members of the Dean’s leadership team.
Provide financial modeling to develop short and long-term financial plans, and analyze impacts of new or proposed initiatives, in alignment with the A&S mission.
As principal advisor to the Dean regarding the management of budget (base $73M E&G, augmented by $1M in private, foundation, and grant funds), provide direction on fiscal policies and procedures of the University and State.
Oversee the financial operations of over 40 academic departments, programs and initiatives. Provide budget and financial supervision, history, and forecasting.
Review current business practices to ensure compliance, follow best practices, and recommend changes to the Dean.
Coordinate funding information with other University units, such as the Offices of Human Resources, Office of Sponsored Programs, Accounts Payable, Budget, Finance W&M Foundation, Reves Center, and the Provost.
Interpret, communicate, and apply State, University, Foundation, and private-fund fiscal guidelines and regulations to ensure compliance; provide leadership, oversight, and guidance to departments, programs, and initiatives regarding appropriate use of funds.
Contribute to the Dean’s leadership team’s deliberations on salary increases. Calculate salary increases per the Board of Visitors’ directives, as communicated by the Provost and Senior Vice President for Administration
Represent Arts & Sciences on relevant campus-wide committees as needed.
Directly supervise three staff and indirectly supervise or coordinate activities of all support staff in the Office of the Dean of Arts & Sciences.
Provide leadership and guidance for administrative personnel throughout A&S by promoting best financial and administrative practices.
Review and approve personnel actions, providing financial advice and direction for the Dean’s leadership team, departments and programs on appropriate salary levels based on budget, comparable positions in A&S and recommendations from Human Resources.
On issues of personnel and position management, coordinate with administrators in other administrative and professional offices, departments, and programs within Arts & Sciences as well as relevant units across William & Mary.
Provide financial oversight with respect to faculty, professional, administrative, operational and classified positions in A&S.

Minimum Masters degree such as MBA, MPA or equivalent degree combination directly related to the position duties is required.
Extensive experience in financial, staff, and operations management, some of which should be in higher education and/or non-profit entities.
Has held a position with final responsibility for the quality and content of all financial data, reporting, and audit coordination for either a division or a significant program.
A track record managing multiple fund sources.
Technology savvy with knowledge of accounting and reporting software.
Has a successful track record in setting priorities; keen analytical, organizational, and problem solving skills which support and enable sound decision making.
Excellent communication and relationship building skills with an ability to prioritize, negotiate, and work with a variety of internal and external stakeholders.
Experience with staff management (direct and indirect supervision) and with serving as a liaison to Human Resources.
Commitment to training programs that maximize individual and organizational goals across the organization including best practices in human resource management

Significant progressive experience in higher education administration and finance.
