Bennington College invites applications for the position of Assistant Controller. The Assistant Controller manages the overall accounting system and assists with other financial matters including the preparation of information for the external audit, and oversight of the general ledger (primarily balance sheet), accounts payable, accounts receivable, fixed assets and payroll, tax reporting, and cash management functions. The Assistant Controller serves as a strategic partner to the Controller in the ongoing advancement of the College’s financial services and accounting operations. To that end, the position assists in the review of internal control policies, and in formulating and maintaining the College’s accounting principles, policies, practices, and procedures that provide the mechanisms for planning and monitoring business operations.
The Assistant Controller oversees the general ledger closing, record investment accounting, and handles the accounting for restricted grants and contributions. The position is responsible for assisting in the preparation of financial statements, annual budgets, and financial modeling. This individual also prepares work papers for the annual audit as well as certain tax filings and reports.
The ideal candidate will have a deep understanding of and experience with a range of financial management operations and will be equally adept as both a hands-on manager and as a strategic partner and contributor. The Assistant Controller is responsible for the direct supervision and ongoing development of a staff of three. Candidates must have demonstrated leadership/supervisory experience and have the ability to successfully engage and develop staff in support of the College’s mission.
The position requires a minimum of 5 years’ related experience (accounting and/or fiscal management functions) preferably within higher education, or a non-profit environment, and demonstrated knowledge of related non-profit accounting standards and tax laws/regulations. Strong organizational, analytical and communication skills are essential. The position requires a strong technology orientation with experience using financial management systems, Microsoft Office and Google Suite. Candidates must be able to analyze complex data and effect solutions within tight deadlines; exceptional accuracy and keen attention to detail is of critical importance. A bachelor’s degree in accounting or CPA is required. The position requires successful completion and acceptable results of a background check.
