The Senior Director, Procurement & Payment Services provides strategic leadership and vision to develop and implement a best-in-class Procure-to-Pay (P2P) program for Wake Forest University. This position is responsible for enhancing innovation by setting the overall strategic direction for the procurement of and payment for goods and services. The Senior Director will be able to collaboratively build strategic relationships with campus partners. This position will lead the successful development, implementation, and management of procurement strategies, policies, and practices that effectively support the University's P2P goals and objectives.
The Senior Director will effectively analyze market trends and benchmarks for best practices and drive strategic cost management. The Senior Director will work with campus departments to facilitate compliance with procurement and accounts payable policy and procedure. This position will identify and evaluate procurement and payables related legislative initiatives and assure the University is in compliance with all applicable federal and state regulations. This position will furnish analysis and cost data for planning, budgeting, and other functional duties.
Develops, in collaboration with the Assistant Vice President, Financial Operations, a long-term vision for the P2P function (i.e., successful integration of the formally separate Procurement and Accounts Payable departments).
Delivers the P2P value proposition to the University in a decentralized, collaborative, and relationship-driven environment, with a focus on operational excellence, customer service, and the total P2P lifecycle.
Leads and develops a customer service oriented and high-performing team environment that embraces a culture of trust via communication, commitment, accountability, and respect.
Manages the P2P function with the spirit of continuous improvement and innovation.
Uses data to develop a sound spend management strategy, identify sourcing opportunities and implement payment best practices.
Provides high-level leadership as the point person for all major strategic negotiations to benefit the University. Develops collaborative partnerships and cultivates strong relationships with campus customers.
Establishes and maintains relationships with strategic suppliers and subcontractors. Negotiates and/or mediates contracts and service level agreements on behalf of and to the benefit of the University. Partners with University Counsel to ensure contract administration minimizes risk to the University while maximizing value for internal customers.
Serves as a leader in Financial Services; participates in strategic planning, development, and execution.
Establishes comprehensive and valued contract administration practices in partnership with the University Legal Department and campus community.
Responsible for internal and external audits of P2P information, processes, and controls.
Establishes and executes environmentally and socially responsible procurement policies.
Required Education, Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
Bachelor’s degree in business management or a related field and eight to ten years of progressively more responsible experience in procurement/supply chain management.
Experience in leading and building a Procurement team to bring the greatest value to an organization.
Demonstrated experience working with Payment Services to ensure collaborative alignment with Procurement, proper management of federal and state tax compliance, and development and implementation of effective payment strategies.
Excellent communication and relationship skills with a proven ability to lead/manage through significant change, build consensus, influence, and be a trusted and collaborative partner, leading innovative strategies and diverse initiatives, and managing complex business issues.
Excellent presentation and writing skills.
Knowledge of superior customer service standards and practices, and the ability to establish and maintain positive relationships with internal and external constituents.
Proven experience in implementing and gaining wide adoption of strategic spend management and electronic procurement systems by having a deep understanding of the interface between process, data evaluation, and technology.
Superior understanding of regulatory and legal requirements related to procurement, contract management, supplier management, and accounts payable.
Ability to establish and maintain corporate relationships with suppliers and subcontractors, and to skillfully negotiate and/or mediate contracts and service level agreements on behalf of and to the benefit of the University.
Proficiency in computer use and related software and the ability to learn new applications and understand systems integration.
Experience in managing a complex Accounts Payable Department.
MBA or other related advanced degree.
Purchasing or P2P certification, and leadership and procurement management responsibility in private higher education.
Experience with Workday.
