Reporting to the Associate Director and Chief Executive Officer, the Senior Director of Academic Appointments and Human Resources will provide leadership and oversight over academic appointments and human resources for the Zuckerman Institute. The Senior Director will lead, manage and develop a team focused on recruitment, development, retention of academic and administrative personnel, performance of employees and will be the primary liaison between the Institute and the Provost's Office on matters of academic affairs. Plays a leadership role in extending the commitment to a fair-employment environment where diversity and respect for others are core values and where prospective and current employees may pursue competitive, rewarding professional employment opportunities.
The Senior Director will be part of the senior administrative team responsible for daily operations of the Zuckerman Institute. The Senior Director is responsible for providing organizational and leadership development and strategic direction of all human resources initiatives, and academic appointment functions. The incumbent will be expected to take a proactive approach in shaping the best possible function to support both academic appointments and human resources for the Zuckerman Institute.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
Academic Appointments: *Oversee the academic appointment process. *Establish effective working relationships with management, faculty, officers of research, and staff throughout the University as appropriate. Serve as the Institute's liaison with the University's Provost Office, Central HR, Legal Counsel, Deans, Directors and Department Chairs on faculty and administrative personnel matters. *In conjunction with the Department Chairs, the Institute's Executive Committee and other relevant faculty leadership, manage all aspects of faculty recruitment, onboarding, and retention. *Oversee appointments for all officers of research (e.g. professional officers of research, postdoctoral research scientists/fellows and staff officers of research). *Serve as an information resource internally, and as a liaison to the Office of the Provost, to ensure that all appointments are processed in a timely and efficient manner. *Liaise with academic departments on the tenure and promotion process for Zuckerman Institute members to ensure that dossiers are inclusive of Institute-relevant work and accomplishments. *Represent the Institute at Faculty Housing Allocation Committee meetings at the University.
Human Resources: *Provide leadership to enhance HR services and ensure that constituents are aware of services available. *Manage HR team responsible for the day-to-day delivery of services; including preparing job descriptions, postings, offer letters, onboarding, promotions, employee relations, disciplinary action, and termination of staff. *Build effective working relationships with the University HR Business Partners. *Develop and maintain a budget for the Academic Appointments and Human Resources unit. *Review and approve new postings for administrative and academic personnel. Develop and oversee processes around recruitment from the identification of a needed position through to onboarding such that faculty and staff needs for hiring are facilitated optimally and are easily compliant with University and government requirements. *Provide overall leadership and serve as the steward for the Institute, advising the Associate Director/CEO and other Institute leaders related to any academic and HR policies and issues and improving process on an ongoing basis.
Bachelor's degree required. Advanced degree desirable; preferably in HR Management and Organizational Management or a related field. A minimum of 8-10 years of related experience required; preferably in senior management and academic affairs.
Significant and progressively more responsible administrative and management experience, including human resources policies, budgeting and planning, and strategic planning. Demonstrated success in faculty recruiting, diversity management and employee development.
The ideal candidate for this position is an experienced leader skilled at guiding, advising on and processing academic appointments and promotions for faculty, officers of research, and postdoctoral scientists.
The candidate will demonstrate capacity in building cultural and pluralistic diversity into their leadership and have experience recruiting and retaining faculty and staff from underrepresented groups.
The candidate must be an innovative thinker who seeks creative solutions and has outstanding interpersonal, written and oral communication skills.
Experience with the study, analysis, evaluation, development, change management or improvement of administrative policies, procedures, practices or programs is preferred.
