The UMC Connection at the University of Colorado Boulder is the campus’ only bowling alley and games area. Located in the heart of campus, The Connection features 10 bowling lanes, eight 9-foot billiards tables, video game consoles (XBOX ONE, PS4, Wii), pinball and arcade games, a foosball table and a selection of food and beverages. This position is responsible for the oversight and management of The Connection’s daily operations, programming, budget and student staff. The position also works collaboratively with internal and external staff and departments for Connection facility reservations, facilities management, and marketing/promotions for the space.
Job Duties with Percentage:
In collaboration with the UMC Program Coordinator, formulates new programs and reviews existing programs for the Connection utilizing market data and customer input. Programs range from ongoing weekly, monthly or one-time programs. Coordinates with university departments and groups the use of the facility to establish new programs based on their program needs and the availability of the facility.
Position works collaboratively with the CU Events Planning and Catering Office for scheduling/reserving parts or all of the facility for private parties and events. Position acts as the first point of contact for clients, providing information on facility offerings and capabilities and general conditions for use of the facility.
Researches trends in game area facilities including using resources through professional organizations such as the ACUI or NACAS and the communities of practice. Collaborates with marketing team to develop marketing strategies for promoting Connection programs, products, and service following established university policies and guidelines.
Position develops and maintains annual budget. Prepares monthly and ad hoc financial reports. Maintain and adjust financial operations to produce the highest profitability and client engagement and satisfaction. This includes best practices in university controls, purchasing and payroll. Maintains strong cash controls through training and monitoring of cashiers. Develops long-range improvements by negotiating with vendors and recommending programming, capital purchases and repairs. Maintains profitable pricing structure for goods and services. Position develops and maintains monthly financial projections and performs monthly product inventory.
Position hires, trains and supervises one graduate student, up to 25 student hourly staff and one part-time equipment maintenance position. Position administers performance management process including providing annual reviews and coaching sessions. Position administers personnel actions as appropriate and needed within UMC and University guidelines.
Position schedules staff appropriately to cover normal business operations, programs, special events and parties. Ensures staffing levels meet the operational needs of the facility to provide exceptional customer service while keeping the overall budget in mind.
Positon embraces and supports the UMC and Division’s student development goals and learning outcomes through daily supervision of staff, sound training programs, and the performance management process.
Position determines and implements comprehensive plans for the Connection/Games Area facility covering safety, equipment and capital upgrades. Works with a variety of groups within the UMC and outside to ensure the facility is a clean, safe and attractive venue. Researches trends in recreation and develops long-term capital plans.
Position orders supplies and equipment as needed, performs monthly inventory, and develops monthly budget projections. Position works collaboratively with internal and external staff and departments for facility reservations, event programming, facilities management, marketing and promotions for the center.
Keeping Current/Compliance 10%
Position reviews current policies and procedures and implements operational changes to ensure facility remains up to date and compliant with UMC, university, and state policies, rules and regulations. Formulates annual and monthly trainings for self and staff to ensure consistency of service provided and policy compliance. This includes updating credit card security protocols, updating procedures for serving of alcohol (TIPS), and following new laws and procedures for hiring staff. Also, ensures activities meet the mission of the UMC, Division and the University. Collaborates with UMC IT to ensure PCI deliverables are met and coordinates student PCI training.
Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelors degree in either a field of Business, Recreation, Sports Management or other related field
Minimum 1-3 years experience overseeing a retail operation or sports/recreation program
Minimum 1-3 years experience developing and overseeing budgets
Minimum 1-3 years supervisory experience including hiring, training, performance reviews, and discipline

Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Masters Degree in either a field of Business, Recreation, Sports Management or other related field
5 years experience overseeing a retail operation or sports/recreation p rogram
5 years experience developing and overseeing budgets with a minimum of $250,000 in revenue
5 years supervisory experience including hiring, training, performance management, and corrective action process
Experience working with and maintaining AMF Qubica or Bruswick bowling equipment, scoring and point of sale systems
Experience working with EMS or similar event management software systems
Experience working in a university or college setting
