Job Summary: The Deputy Controller is a prominent position that assists the Assistant Vice President for Finance & Controller in managing the financial and regulatory risks at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. The Deputy Controller performs controller functions and is ensures that the Institute is in compliance with accounting principles and federal and state laws and regulations. The Deputy Controller prepares periodic federal, state and local tax filings, annual audits, financial statements and internal reports, and performs advanced account analysis and reconciliations. In addition, the Deputy Controller assists with the review of business/accounting policies and procedures and system enhancements in order to identify, recommend, and implement improvements. The Deputy Controller manages direct and indirect reports, and oversees Financial Reporting, Tax and Financial Systems, Payroll and Accounts Payable.

Qualifications: Minimally, candidates will have a Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting or related field; an advanced degree or Certified Public Accountant (CPA) is preferred. Additionally, the candidate will have at least seven (7) years related and progressively responsible experience, including work in a large, preferably non-profit, organization with complex revenue streams, and extensive experience working with sophisticated financial accounting systems. Experience must include at least two (2) years in a leadership role, managing high-functioning managers and professionals across multiple functions. Experience in a higher ed setting is preferred.
Qualified candidates will have a thorough knowledge of GAAP, and the ability to communicate complex accounting issues in simple, understandable terms. Candidates will have the demonstrated ability to build effective teams and work through others to accomplish outcomes, along the ability to train and supervise direct and indirect reports. Candidate must be able appropriately manage and maintain privileged, sensitive, and confidential information. Candidates are expected to have knowledge of payroll and accounts payable tax withholdings, filings and non-resident alien tax laws, and knowledge of automated accounting systems, both mainframe and PC based.
