The University of Massachusetts Amherst invites applications for a Research IT Systems Specialist. The Research IT Specialist works under the direction of the Project Administrator to implement, administer and support Research software applications within Research & Engagement and will provide training and support to faculty, staff and students.
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Business, or related field and two years of experience providing complex network and technology configuration, maintenance, support and incident response; or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience in Computer Science, Business, or related field and four years of experience in providing complex network and technology configuration, maintenance, support and incident response, along with in-depth experience with Windows, Linux, and Mac desktop and server administration required.
Ability to perform long and short term Research IT project development, planning, implementation, and management.
Ability to design and develop clear instructional materials, and to communicate with patience and clarity, technical concepts to a non-technical audience, including individuals and cross-functional teams with diverse backgrounds and experience.
Excellent analytical skills and ability to plan, recommend, implement and monitor effective and efficient processes and to identify problems and implement solutions.
Knowledge and demonstrated experience with enterprise research administration software, and interactive web-based tools.
Excellent organizational skills and the ability to prioritize and effectively manage multiple and emergin priorities. Ability to meet the demands of a complex environment where timeliness and availability of information is considered critical.
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills (written and verbal) and ability to supervise a cohort of staff and students of varying experience, and work positively and assertively with College faculty, staff, and students with diverse skills, priorities and from diverse backgrounds and with staff from central administrative departments such as campus central IT, as well as with vendors and outside service providers.
Ability to train and support staff who are efficient, customer-oriented and work effectively with a wide range of individuals including students, faculty, administrative staff and administrators.
Experience meeting demands of a complex production environment where system availability is mission critical is preferred. Must be able to plan and schedule migrations and updates to minimize impact on users. Must be able to troubleshoot and fix problems while communicating expected time to resolution under stressful conditions.
Experience in higher education or research is preferred.
Required to work some nights and weekends.
