Suffolk University is seeking qualified applicants to consider for the Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) Specialist II position. Will work with the Director to ensure compliance with applicable federal, state and local regulation through effective EHS programs development and implementation. Primary responsibilities include: reviewing and revising written safety programs and procedures, presenting and updating EHS trainings, performing relevant inspections and audits, managing hazardous waste/materials and universal waste programs, identifying and correcting safety and health deficiencies, responding to EHS related incidents and participate in incident investigations, and completing projects as assigned. Position will be on-call and as a back-up to the Director in emergency response situations.
Ensure Suffolk University EHS programs are maintained, updated and implemented campus wide. Update relevant program documents in a timely manner and communicate to those who need the information and work closely with the Director to continuously improve the safety culture of the university community. Be an active member and resource to relevant safety committees
Work across the university to identify and correct EHS issues through inspections, audits, risk assessments and hazard analysis of areas not limited to, science and engineering labs, facilities building and maintenance, performing and visual arts, woodshops, etc.
Work with facilities to address identified deficiencies or problems. Respond to incidents, perform and review incident investigations and coordinate follow ups or carry out basic related industrial hygiene work. Document and maintain relevant incident records accordingly.
Manage or coordinate the hazardous materials/waste and universal waste programs. Maintain required trainings and certification in handling, recording keeping, storage and transportation of hazardous materials and waste and provide hazardous material users/handlers on campus with required training.
Maintain up to date waste manifests records. Inspect and audit waste accumulation areas for compliance with relevant regulations like RCRA, etc.
Ensure timely and safe transfer of waste between satellite and main accumulation areas and eventually offsite shipment according to generator status among other regulations and requirements.
Focus on effectiveness to ensure continuous improvement of the program that meets compliance requirements as well as is responsive to the needs of the client's university wide
Make sure program documents and policies are easily accessible to the users online or onsite. Maintain an accurate inventory of all waste and accumulation sites Prepare and present applicable EHS trainings required by regulations including but not limited to, hazard communication, new employees safety awareness, new user lab safety training, LOTO, confined space awareness, blood borne pathogens, etc. Be the Chemical Inventory point of contact, to coordinate upgrades and correct potential deficiencies in conjunction with the users, systems vendor and university IT contact.
Be the chemical inventory (UNH CEMS) liaison and trainer for users across campus. Be aware that maintaining an accurate chemical and hazardous materials inventory is key to part of the chemical hygiene program and is important for compliance with numerous regulations and codes. Ensure the information is accessible to first responders during emergencies. Ensure annual trainings or regulation required training are provided in a timely manner
BS/BA degree in a science or engineering field such as, Occupational Health, Environmental Science, Industrial Hygiene or related field.
Knowledge of applicable OSHA, DEP, EPA, NFPA, DEP and MWRA regulations.
Experience with hazardous waste codes and manifest requirements.
Minimum of 3 plus years EHS experience preferably in a higher education environment.
Excellent verbal, written and presentation communication skills.
Highly effective and professional interpersonal skills
Experience preparing and presenting EHS trainings and recordkeeping.
Strong computer and organizational skills.
Ability to be proactive, follow up and follow through to ensure safety compliance for regular activities as well as future projects
Be able to use good judgement and build rapport with diverse internal and external clientele
Able to lift up to 25 pounds and walk the campus on a regular basis
