Suffolk University is seeking qualified candidates to consider for the Manager of Accounting and Payroll position. This key position will report to the Controller and is responsible for overseeing the day-to-day accounting and payroll operations. The Manager of Accounting and Payroll will manage the daily accounting activities of the general accounting team, is required to maintain the data integrity of the university's general ledger and payroll system and ensure payroll is processed in an accurate, compliant and timely manner.
Primary/Principal Responsibilities: Coordinates, directs, and controls payroll preparation, processing, and distribution. Responsible for the end to end payroll and tax processing and reporting including regulatory compliance; Evaluates and implements improvements to payroll processes and controls, Workday payroll system, tax filings and accounting for payroll transactions.
Maintains current knowledge of and ensures Payroll function complies with all applicable state and federal wage and hour laws, legal regulations and payroll requirements; Ensures the Payroll function complies with internal policies and procedures; Facilitates management and employee understanding of payroll processes and procedures and keeps all university management and departments informed about changes in current payroll and tax regulations, laws and policies. Works with HR to ensure the payroll system is aligned with changes to Human Resources (HR) benefits and integrates Workday upgrade features into Suffolk's processes.
Reviews financial data and ensures that the general ledger accounts are accurate and reconciled on a monthly basis; Prepare and/or approve review balance sheet reconciliations; Processes and reviews journal entries as needed for General Ledger, including payroll journal entries. Assists Controller with interim and yearend external audits; Develops and maintains internal controls and ensures all key internal controls for payroll and accounting are in place and continuously operating effectively. Assists in preparation of monthly and quarterly financial packages for senior administration and the Board of Trustees and Committees.
Assists Controller in streamlining and identifying efficiency in the accounting and payroll departments by making and implementing recommendations to improve accounting and payroll processes, procedures and policies.
Supervises and co-ordinates activities of the general accounting and payroll staff. Manages payroll workload to meet operational and business requirements. 7+ years of relevant accounting and payroll experience
Bachelor's degree in Accounting or related field
CPA Preferred and/or public accounting/auditing experience
Strong familiarity and understanding of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP)
Prior experience managing payroll operations and processes and solid working knowledge of US and multi-state payroll reporting requirements
Excellent written, verbal and interpersonal skills
Strong sense of business ethics, integrity, confidentiality and accountability
Adapt at managing multiple priorities and business partners
Commitment to detailed financial accounting and reporting
Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite
Experience working in a relevant role in higher education is preferred
